Nestled in the heart of the rainforest, Luna Lodge is a haven for bird lovers and nature enthusiasts alike. Whether you’re a passionate birder or just beginning to appreciate avian wonders, here are some of the extraordinary birds spotted recently around the lodge:

🟥 Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao)

With its brilliant red feathers, long tail, and commanding presence, the Scarlet Macaw is one of our most dramatic daily visitors. You’ll often hear its loud, echoing calls before you see it soaring overhead in pairs or small groups.

💛 Yellow-throated Toucan (Ramphastos ambiguus)

A standout among toucans, this large bird features a striking two-toned bill—bright yellow with brown—and a cheerful yellow throat. Its unique croaking song fills the air during the early morning and late afternoon hours.

🐦 Common Tody-Flycatcher (Todirostrum cinereum)

Tiny but bold, this yellow-and-black beauty has a proportionally large, flat bill and loves nesting in low shrubs. Look closely—you might spot its delicate hanging nest crafted from fine fibers.

🔴 Red-capped Manakin (Ceratopipra mentalis)

Small, plump, and mysterious, this black-bodied bird with a red crown may be seen perched quietly or performing its famous “moonwalk” display to attract a mate during the breeding season.

🟤 Chestnut-backed Antbird (Poliocrania exsul)

Heard more often than seen, this forest-floor dweller sings a clear, melodic tune. If you do catch a glimpse, watch for its chestnut back, bluish face, and gray crown.

🖤 Black-hooded Antshrike (Thamnophilus bridgesi)

Endemic to Costa Rica’s Pacific coast and western Panama, this striking bird is often heard before it’s seen. Its fast-paced, laughing call adds character to the forest sounds surrounding Luna Lodge.

🔵 Red-legged Honeycreeper (Cyanerpes cyaneus)

Electric blue with red legs and a pale blue crown, this energetic nectar lover flits among the trees with green females nearby. Watch for them in groups, feeding on flowers around the gardens.

🟠 Rufous-tailed Hummingbird (Amazilia tzacatl)

Always active and fiercely territorial, this feisty hummingbird is a daily delight. Its rufous tail and rapid movements make it easy to spot as it darts among garden blooms.

⚪ White-necked Jacobin (Florisuga mellivora)

One of the largest local hummingbirds, this stunner sports a deep blue head, white neck and belly, and a fan-shaped tail. You’ll often find it hovering near the lodge’s flower beds.

🔨 Pale-billed Woodpecker (Campephilus guatemalensis)

This large woodpecker announces its presence with powerful drumming on dead trees. Look for its striking black body, bright red head, and two clean white stripes down the back.

🌟 Golden-hooded Tanager (Stilpnia larvata)

A rainbow of color: black and blue body, white belly, and a golden-yellow hood. Frequently seen in mixed flocks, especially near fruiting trees and feeders around the lodge.

🔴 Scarlet-rumped Tanager (Ramphocelus passerinii)

A familiar face around Luna Lodge! These social birds travel in flocks and brighten the day with their jet-black bodies and vivid scarlet backs.
